Korean lessons: prices and where to find a teacher

Local Korean tutors are rare outside London and the university cities, so most learners in Evington take their lessons online. Face to face, count on £30 to £45 an hour; the Korean Cultural Centre UK and some universities also run evening courses.

Online, native Korean tutors charge from around £10 to £30 an hour. Many use the Talk To Me In Korean or Sogang textbooks, and adapt lessons to the dramas and songs you already follow.

TOPIK I and TOPIK II: the Korean proficiency test

The TOPIK is the official test, split into TOPIK I (levels 1 and 2) and TOPIK II (levels 3 to 6). Korean universities usually ask for level 3 or 4, and some work visas for level 2 or more.

The test is held a few times a year, with a centre in London. Learners in East Midlands prepare with past papers and a tutor who reviews their writing, the section where most marks are lost.

Hangul in a weekend, then grammar and politeness

The Korean alphabet, hangul, is logical and most adults can read it within a few days with a tutor. The challenge lies in grammar, with the verb at the end of the sentence, and in the levels of politeness that change verb endings.

Count on about 2,200 hours for professional fluency. Two lessons a week, with K-dramas watched in Korean and a language exchange partner, keep learners in Evington motivated through the longer middle stretch.

Korean tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Korean tutors in Evington: frequently asked questions

Can I learn Korean from K-dramas alone?

Dramas are great for listening and motivation, but they rarely teach grammar or polite speech correctly. A tutor turns what you hear into language you can use yourself.

Is Korean harder than Japanese for English speakers?

The alphabet is easier than Japanese characters, while the grammar is comparable. Both take English speakers a long time to master, roughly the same number of hours.

Where is the TOPIK held in England?

The TOPIK is organised in London, through the Korean Education Centre, a few times a year. Places are limited, so register as soon as dates are announced.
