Mandarin lessons: what to budget per hour

Private Mandarin tutors in person in Kingston upon Thames usually charge £28 to £45 an hour, and university language centres or Confucius Institutes, where they still operate, run evening courses for adults at lower group rates.

Online, native tutors from mainland China and Taiwan start at around £10 to £15 an hour. Lessons focused on business Chinese or HSK preparation cost more. Most learners take two lessons a week, as tones and characters fade quickly without regular practice.

HSK levels and how long Chinese takes to learn

The HSK is the standard Mandarin test, with levels from 1 to 9 in its new format, and the HSKK covers speaking. Universities and employers usually ask for HSK 4 or 5. Mandarin is one of the longest languages for English speakers to learn: roughly 2,200 hours for professional fluency.

Learners in London reach basic conversation after a year of steady lessons. A tutor gives you what apps cannot: live correction of your tones, which is what makes you understood.

Simplified or traditional characters, and what a lesson looks like

Mainland China and Singapore use simplified characters, Taiwan and Hong Kong traditional ones. Most learners start with simplified, and pinyin, the alphabet transcription, carries you through the first months.

A typical lesson in Kingston upon Thames opens with pronunciation and tones, then dialogue, a few new characters and their components, and ends with homework you can do on an app. Ask your tutor whether they teach Cantonese as well, if Hong Kong is your goal.

Chinese tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Chinese tutors in Kingston upon Thames: frequently asked questions

Should I learn Mandarin or Cantonese?

Mandarin is spoken across mainland China and Taiwan and is the one most courses teach. Cantonese makes sense if your family, work or travel is centred on Hong Kong or Guangdong.

Can I learn to speak Chinese without learning characters?

For basic conversation, yes, using pinyin. To read signs, menus and messages, or to pass the HSK beyond the first levels, you will need characters, which a tutor introduces gradually.

Where can I take the HSK exam in England?

HSK tests are held at approved centres, often within universities, in London and several other cities, both on paper and online. Check dates on the official HSK registration site.
