French lessons: price per hour for adults

French is widely taught in Mill Yard, through adult education centres, the Alliance Française and Institut français in the larger cities, and many private tutors. In person, expect £25 to £40 an hour; a term of evening classes costs around £150 to £300.

Online, native tutors from France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada start at about £10 to £15 an hour. Conversation lessons for adults who learnt French at school are among the most popular, and progress is quick once the old vocabulary comes back.

DELF, DALF and TCF: French certificates for adults

The DELF (A1 to B2) and the DALF (C1 and C2) are the official French diplomas, valid for life. The TCF and TEF are tests often used for French nationality, which requires a B2 level, and for immigration to Canada.

Exam sessions run at the Institut français in London and at approved centres in other cities in North West England. A tutor trains you on the format: written summaries, letters and a structured oral presentation.

Buying property or retiring to France: French that works

Many learners in Mill Yard prepare for life in France: dealing with the notaire, the mairie, tradespeople, the doctor and neighbours. A tutor can build lessons around real documents, phone calls and the vocabulary of property and administration.

French takes English speakers around 600 to 750 hours for professional fluency. Two lessons a week, French radio or podcasts and a French conversation group, often run by twinning associations, keep you progressing.

French tutors by video call: you choose a native or qualified tutor of this language, book a first lesson at a low price, then set your own pace.
