Russian lessons: what a tutor charges

Private Russian tutors in person in Portslade Village usually charge £25 to £40 an hour, and some universities and adult education services run Russian evening classes. Outside the larger cities, learners mostly study online.

Online, native tutors start at around £10 to £15 an hour. Many are also fluent in Ukrainian or another language of the region, so say clearly which language and which variety you want to learn in your first lesson.

Cyrillic, cases and the pace of learning Russian

The Cyrillic alphabet takes a week or two to learn with a tutor. Grammar takes longer: six cases, verbs of motion and aspect. Count on around 1,100 hours of study for professional fluency.

Two lessons a week, combined with listening to Russian podcasts and reading short texts with an online dictionary, bring most adults in Portslade Village to simple conversation within six to nine months. A tutor's live correction of stress and endings is what makes the difference.

Russian tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
