European or Brazilian Portuguese: which one to learn

The two share the same grammar but sound very different, and everyday vocabulary and forms of address change too. Pick European Portuguese if you are moving to Portugal, Brazilian Portuguese for Brazil or for the large Brazilian communities in South East England.

Local tutors in Caldecott are rarer than for Spanish, so many learners go online, where tutors of both varieties are easy to find. Tell your tutor in the trial lesson which variety you need and why.

Portuguese lessons: prices and how they work

Face-to-face Portuguese tutors usually charge £25 to £40 an hour where they can be found in Caldecott. Online, native Brazilian tutors often start at £8 to £12 an hour, tutors from Portugal slightly higher.

A typical lesson mixes conversation, pronunciation and grammar, with homework sent between sessions. Spanish speakers progress fast but must watch out for false friends and the nasal vowels; a tutor will correct those habits early.

CAPLE and Celpe-Bras: certificates in Portuguese

The CAPLE exams from the University of Lisbon certify European Portuguese from A1 to C2, and an A2 level is required for Portuguese citizenship. Brazil uses the Celpe-Bras, needed for some study and professional routes.

Test centres are few, so check dates early and prepare with a tutor who knows the format. Learners based in Oxfordshire usually travel to London or sit the exam on a trip to Portugal.

Portuguese tutors by video call: you choose a native or qualified tutor of this language, book a first lesson at a low price, then set your own pace.
