Modern Hebrew lessons: rates and formats

Hebrew is taught in Callington mainly by private tutors, synagogues and community organisations, and in London by several ulpan-style programmes. In person, expect £28 to £45 an hour.

Online, native tutors from Israel start at around £12 to £20 an hour and often teach early in the morning or late in the evening thanks to the time difference. The ulpan method, focused on speaking from day one, is what most tutors use.

The Hebrew alphabet, reading without vowels and pace

The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, read from right to left, and takes most adults two to three weeks with a tutor. Everyday texts are written without vowel marks, so reading fluently takes practice.

Modern Hebrew takes English speakers about 1,100 hours for professional fluency. Learners in South West England who take two lessons a week reach simple conversation in six to nine months, especially with Israeli podcasts or series in the background.

Biblical or modern Hebrew: choosing your lessons

Biblical Hebrew is studied for reading scripture and prayers, with its own grammar and vocabulary; modern Hebrew is the living language of Israel. Some tutors teach both, but most specialise in one.

State your goal in the trial lesson: reading the Torah portion, talking with relatives, preparing for aliyah or travelling. Learners in Callington preparing for a move usually combine online lessons with an intensive ulpan once in Israel.
