Online, native Swedish tutors charge from around £15 to £35 an hour, and many teach after work hours in Sweden, which matches English evenings. Lessons often combine conversation with the Rivstart or Mål textbooks used in Swedish adult education.

Swedex and TISUS: proving your level in Swedish

Swedex certifies levels A2 to B2 and is useful for jobs and personal goals. TISUS is the test Swedish universities accept for admission. People who settle in Sweden can also join SFI, the free Swedish for immigrants programme.

Preparing from England, learners in South West England usually take weekly lessons for a year or more before the test, with a tutor who reviews their writing and pronunciation.

Pitch accent and vocabulary: how fast Swedish comes

Swedish grammar is simple for English speakers, with no cases and many familiar words. The melody of the language, its pitch accent, and a few vowel sounds are the hard part, and that is where a tutor helps most.

Count on around 600 to 750 hours for professional fluency. Learners in Longdowns with two lessons a week and Swedish podcasts or series usually hold simple conversations within four to six months.

Swedish tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Swedish tutors in Longdowns: frequently asked questions

Is Swedish easy to learn for English speakers?

Yes, Swedish is one of the easier languages: simple grammar and lots of shared vocabulary. Pronunciation takes the most practice, best done with a native tutor.

Do I need Swedish to work in Sweden?

Many workplaces use English, but Swedish makes daily life and integration much easier, and some jobs, especially in public services, require it.

Will learning Swedish help me understand Norwegian and Danish?

Yes: Swedish and Norwegian are largely mutually intelligible, especially in writing, and Danish written texts are easy to follow. Spoken Danish takes more practice.
