How much do Italian lessons cost?

A private Italian tutor in person in Bath usually charges £25 to £40 an hour, with London rates a little higher. Adult education centres and some universities run Italian evening classes at around £10 to £15 an hour per student.

Online, native Italian tutors start at about £10 an hour. Conversation lessons are the cheapest; preparation for a CILS or CELI certificate and lessons for professionals cost more. A trial lesson is the best way to check you get on with the tutor.

CILS, CELI and PLIDA: Italian language certificates

Three certificates are recognised by the Italian state: the CILS from the University of Siena, the CELI from Perugia and the PLIDA from the Società Dante Alighieri. A B1 certificate is needed for Italian citizenship by marriage or residence, which brings many learners in South West England to lessons.

A tutor who knows the exam will train you on its tasks: listening, reading, writing and a short oral. The Italian Cultural Institute and approved centres run sessions in London and a few other cities.

Learning Italian for travel: a realistic plan

For a holiday, twenty to thirty hours of lessons are enough to order, ask the way, chat with your hosts and understand menus. Start three months before you leave, with one or two lessons a week focused on speaking.

Italian pronunciation is regular, so English speakers sound right quickly. To practise in Bath, look for an Italian conversation evening, an Italian deli or café with Italian staff, or an online exchange partner, and keep a list of the phrases you use most.

Italian tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Italian tutors in Bath: frequently asked questions

How quickly can I learn basic Italian for a holiday?

With two lessons a week and some daily practice, most adults manage the basics in two to three months: greetings, ordering, directions and small talk. A tutor can build the lessons around your itinerary.

What level of Italian do I need for citizenship?

Italian citizenship by marriage or residence requires a B1 certificate from a recognised body such as CILS, CELI or PLIDA. Check the latest rules with the Italian consulate before you start.

Are online Italian lessons as good as face-to-face ones?

For conversation and grammar, yes, and you get a much wider choice of native tutors. Face-to-face suits people who concentrate better in the same room as their teacher.
