Russian lessons: what a tutor charges

Private Russian tutors in person in Lower Clopton usually charge £25 to £40 an hour, and some universities and adult education services run Russian evening classes. Outside the larger cities, learners mostly study online.

Online, native tutors start at around £10 to £15 an hour. Many are also fluent in Ukrainian or another language of the region, so say clearly which language and which variety you want to learn in your first lesson.

Cyrillic, cases and the pace of learning Russian

The Cyrillic alphabet takes a week or two to learn with a tutor. Grammar takes longer: six cases, verbs of motion and aspect. Count on around 1,100 hours of study for professional fluency.

Two lessons a week, combined with listening to Russian podcasts and reading short texts with an online dictionary, bring most adults in Lower Clopton to simple conversation within six to nine months. A tutor's live correction of stress and endings is what makes the difference.

TORFL and A level Russian: certificates you can take

The TORFL (also called TRKI) is the international certificate for Russian, with levels from elementary to fourth certificate. Learners in West Midlands can also sit GCSE or A level Russian as private candidates at an approved exam centre.

Check the availability of test sessions before you commit to a date, and ask your tutor to work through past papers with you in the final weeks.
