Dutch lessons: how much an hour costs

Dutch is rarely taught in schools in Nether Edge, so most learners go online or find a tutor through a university language centre. In person, a private Dutch tutor charges £28 to £45 an hour.

Online, native tutors from the Netherlands and Belgium charge from about £15 to £35 an hour. Lessons for professionals moving with their job, and preparation for the state exam, cost a little more. Ask your employer: relocation packages often cover language lessons.

Staatsexamen NT2 and the civic integration exam

People settling in the Netherlands sit the civic integration exam, and the Staatsexamen NT2 is required to study at a Dutch university or for many professional jobs. The CNaVT certificate is recognised in Belgium and abroad.

Preparing from England, learners in Yorkshire and the Humber usually take two lessons a week for six to twelve months, with a tutor who knows the format of the speaking and writing parts.

Why Dutch is quick to pick up for English speakers

Dutch shares a lot of vocabulary and structure with English, and is one of the faster languages to learn: around 600 to 750 hours for professional fluency. Pronunciation, especially the guttural g and the vowels, is where a tutor helps most.

The Dutch often switch to English when they hear an accent, so practise with a tutor first in Nether Edge, then ask colleagues and friends to keep to Dutch. Dutch radio and children's television are good listening practice.
