German lessons: hourly rates and course formats

German is taught in fewer schools than Spanish or French, so a specialist tutor in Highfields can take some finding. Expect £28 to £45 an hour for a qualified private tutor in person, and £150 to £300 for a term of evening classes where they run.

Online, native tutors from Germany and Austria charge from around £12 to £35 an hour. Business German, translation work and exam preparation sit at the top of that range. Buying lessons in blocks of ten usually brings the hourly price down.

Goethe-Zertifikat and TestDaF: German certificates explained

The Goethe-Zertifikat, from A1 to C2, is the reference certificate, and the A1 level is required for some German family visas. TestDaF and the DSH are the tests German universities ask for. The Goethe-Institut runs exams in London and Glasgow, and partner centres cover other cities.

Preparation with a tutor centres on the four skills, with plenty of timed writing and mock speaking. Learners in East Midlands often combine weekly online lessons with an intensive week before the exam date.

Cases, word order and how long German takes

The four cases and the verb at the end of the clause are what slow English speakers down at first. A tutor who explains them through real sentences, rather than tables, saves months. Count on around 900 hours for professional fluency, which means two to three years at two lessons a week.

Between lessons in Highfields, German podcasts for learners, slow news broadcasts and a language exchange partner online keep your ear trained. Many German speakers in England are keen to swap an hour of German for an hour of English.

German tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

German tutors in Highfields: frequently asked questions

Is German hard to learn for English speakers?

German shares a lot of vocabulary with English, which helps from the start. Grammar is the harder part, with cases and genders. With a tutor and regular practice, a simple conversation comes within six months.

Where can I sit the Goethe-Zertifikat in England?

The Goethe-Institut London runs the exams, and approved partner centres hold sessions in other cities. Dates fill quickly in spring, so register a couple of months ahead.

Do German tutors teach business German?

Many do, especially online: meetings, emails, presentations and negotiation vocabulary. Look for a profile that mentions business German and ask for lessons built around your own work documents.
