Greek lessons: what to budget

Greek community schools and churches run classes in several English cities, and private tutors teach in Highfields where there is demand. In person, expect £25 to £40 an hour.

Online, native tutors from Greece and Cyprus start at around £12 an hour. Lessons can focus on conversation for holidays, on reading for property paperwork, or on the certificate of attainment. Ancient Greek is a separate subject, taught by a smaller number of specialist tutors.

The Greek alphabet and how quickly you progress

The Greek alphabet takes most adults one to two weeks with a tutor, helped by the many letters already familiar from maths and science. Grammar has cases and verb forms that take longer, around 1,100 hours for professional fluency.

Learners in East Midlands who take two lessons a week reach comfortable holiday conversation in a few months. Listening to Greek radio and music and reading simple news helps fix the stress patterns.

Certificate of Attainment in Greek and GCSE Greek

The Certificate of Attainment in Greek, from the Centre for the Greek Language, is the official qualification, with levels from A1 to C2; sessions are held each spring at approved centres, including in London. GCSE and A level Modern Greek are also open to private candidates in Leicestershire and beyond.

A tutor who knows the exam will drill the four skills with past papers and timed speaking. Register early, as places at the London centre are limited.

Greek tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.
