ESOL and English lessons for newcomers: what they cost locally

In Soho, free or low-cost ESOL classes are often run by the local further education college or the council's adult learning service, especially for people on certain benefits or with refugee status. Waiting lists can be long, and classes are in groups of fifteen or more.

A private English tutor who comes to your home or meets you in a library usually charges £25 to £40 an hour outside London, more in the capital. Online, native English tutors start at around £10 to £15 an hour, and many specialise in learners whose first language is Arabic, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese or Urdu.

IELTS, Life in the UK and B1 English for settlement

Most visa and settlement routes ask for proof of English at a set level, usually through an approved Secure English Language Test such as IELTS for UKVI or a Trinity or LanguageCert SELT. Citizenship applications need B1 speaking and listening, plus the separate Life in the UK test, which is about history and customs, not language.

A tutor who knows the exam format makes a real difference: timed speaking practice, writing tasks marked against the official criteria and listening drills. Book the test only once your tutor agrees you are ready, as a retake costs the full fee again. Test centres serve the larger towns in Greater London.

How long it takes to become confident in English

Moving from beginner to a comfortable B1, enough for work and daily life in Soho, usually takes 350 to 400 hours of study and practice. Two private lessons a week, plus listening to radio, podcasts and conversations at work, gets most adults there in eighteen months to two years.

The quickest progress comes from speaking as much as possible: one-to-one lessons give you far more speaking time than a group. Ask your tutor to focus on the situations you face every week, at the GP, at the jobcentre, with your landlord or at your children's school.

English as a foreign language tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

English as a foreign language tutors in Soho: frequently asked questions

Where can I find free ESOL classes in my area?

Contact your local further education college, the council's adult learning service and community centres: many offer free or subsidised ESOL courses for eligible adults. Libraries and charities also run conversation clubs. Private or online tutors fill the gap while you wait for a place.

Which English test do I need for a UK visa?

Most visa routes require a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider, such as IELTS for UKVI, at the level set for your route. Check the official GOV.UK page for your visa before booking, as the required level and skills vary.

Can an online tutor prepare me for IELTS?

Yes. Many online tutors specialise in IELTS and mark practice essays and speaking tasks against the official band descriptors. Look for a profile that mentions IELTS preparation and ask for a mock speaking test during the trial lesson.
