Turkish lessons: rates in person and online

Private Turkish tutors in person can be found in Soho in the larger towns, especially where there is a Turkish community, and usually charge £25 to £40 an hour. Community centres sometimes run classes for adults too.

Online, native tutors from Turkey are among the most affordable, often from £7 to £12 an hour, with plenty of evening slots. Ten-lesson packages bring the price down further, and many tutors also help with practical vocabulary for buying or renting property.

Vowel harmony and suffixes: how Turkish works

Turkish builds words by adding suffixes in a fixed order, and vowels change to match the word, which is called vowel harmony. The rules are very regular: once you know them, you can form many words on your own.

Count on around 1,100 hours for professional fluency. Learners in London who take two lessons a week usually manage holiday conversations after three months and more relaxed exchanges with family after a year.

Turkish certificates and practising between lessons

Turkish proficiency can be certified through the Yunus Emre Institute's exam, recognised by Turkish institutions, and universities in Turkey run their own tests for international students. GCSE and A level Turkish are also available in England as private entries.

Between lessons in Soho, Turkish television series, music and a conversation partner online help a lot. A tutor can prepare you specifically for the situations you face on holiday or with your partner's family.

Turkish tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Turkish tutors in Soho: frequently asked questions

Is Turkish difficult to learn?

How many lessons do I need for a holiday in Turkey?

Fifteen to twenty lessons over two to three months cover greetings, numbers, ordering, shopping and directions. A tutor can tailor them to your destination.

Are online Turkish tutors expensive?

No: Turkish is among the most affordable languages online, with many native tutors at modest hourly rates and discounted trial lessons.
