Russian lessons: what a tutor charges

Private Russian tutors in person in Brighton usually charge £25 to £40 an hour, and some universities and adult education services run Russian evening classes. Outside the larger cities, learners mostly study online.

Online, native tutors start at around £10 to £15 an hour. Many are also fluent in Ukrainian or another language of the region, so say clearly which language and which variety you want to learn in your first lesson.

Cyrillic, cases and the pace of learning Russian

The Cyrillic alphabet takes a week or two to learn with a tutor. Grammar takes longer: six cases, verbs of motion and aspect. Count on around 1,100 hours of study for professional fluency.

Two lessons a week, combined with listening to Russian podcasts and reading short texts with an online dictionary, bring most adults in Brighton to simple conversation within six to nine months. A tutor's live correction of stress and endings is what makes the difference.

TORFL and A level Russian: certificates you can take

The TORFL (also called TRKI) is the international certificate for Russian, with levels from elementary to fourth certificate. Learners in South East England can also sit GCSE or A level Russian as private candidates at an approved exam centre.

Check the availability of test sessions before you commit to a date, and ask your tutor to work through past papers with you in the final weeks.

Russian tutors: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week all year round

The most common pace among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you about one level a year, as long as you practise a little between lessons.

A final push before an exam

Three or four sessions a week for one to two months, focused on the format of the test, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news or your job, and the tutor corrects the mistakes that keep coming back.

Russian tutors in Brighton: frequently asked questions

How hard is Russian for English speakers?

Russian is a medium to hard language for English speakers, mainly for its grammar. The alphabet is quickly learnt, and with a tutor most adults read simple texts within a few months.

Can a beginner learn Russian online?

Yes. Online tutors start with the alphabet and pronunciation, share their screen for reading practice and send homework between lessons. Choose a tutor whose profile says they teach beginners.

Can I take GCSE Russian as an adult?

Yes, as a private candidate at an exam centre that accepts external entries. Contact centres early, as not all of them host Russian, and prepare with past papers and a tutor.
